Butterflies
I'm trying to identify all my butterfly photos by species. Still some gaps. If you see any you know that aren't labeled yet, please comment. Update: I've embedded the Flickr code because the Posterous bookmarklet seems to be broken..

The storm was approaching fast, when I spotted this Virgin Tiger Moth (Grammia virgo) of the family Arctiidae. What a beautiful creature! The hind wings are a fluorescent orange which glows brightly as the wings beat. Amazing. Yet, when at rest in the grass, this boldly-patterned moth blends right in.

I just ordered a reprint of W. J. Holland's definitive field guide "A Popular Guide To A Knowledge Of The Moths Of North America." I'm excited to learn more about these fascinating insects. Although there are more recent and exhaustive guides to North American moths, notably the ones published by Wedge Entomological Research Foundation http://www.wedgefoundation.org/publications.html they are prohibitively expensive for my budget. Perhaps some day they will be available as a set on a CD.
