Sign of the Times

I saw this sign while strolling along a path on UWRF grounds. It made me wonder what sort of audience this sign is intended for.

I think there should be another sign next to this one. The new sign should clarify just exactly what is meant by night, winter, path maintenance, artificial lighting, and safety. For example, at night it gets dark and thus it becomes difficult to see the path. In such an event, don't expect any assistance in the form of artificial lighting.

Perhaps a hotline phone number should be included, so that one could call to receive further advice, explanations and instructions.

However, I can already anticipate a potentially awkward situation which could arise if someone were to accidentally begin walking down the path during nighttime hours. Since it is dark at night, and since light is necessary in order to read the sign, a person might pass by the sign entirely unawares and thus miss out on this timely and important safety advice. I shudder to think of the possible adverse consequences to public safety.

Perhaps it would be best to illuminate the sign at night, so that it may be read. However, this would have the effect of introducing a logical contradiction, as the sign plainly states that no such light will be provided. A person could be stuck there all night trying to figure it out.

Perhaps the best thing to do would be to modify the text of the sign so that it would say something to the effect that aside from signage, no artificial lighting will be provided.

Perhaps an emergency call button should also be placed there, so that a person may call for rescue in the event that they become confused as to the safest way to proceed.

I'm sure that you can now see what a complex issue this really is. Perhaps the matter should be referred to the Public Safety Committee for further consideration.
